Nicolás González Cásares

Born in A Coruña in 1972, he studied nursing at the University of Santiago de Compostela, working for the 061 emergency service and as a specialist instructor in life support. In this field, he authored the Manual de Soporte Vital Avanzado en Urgencias Prehospitalarias (2007), among other healthcare publications.

In parallel, González Casares has pursued a political career at the local level, serving as First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Urban Planning, Social Services, Health, and Sports during the previous legislature in Lalín, a town in the heart of Galicia.

Following the European Parliament elections in May 2019, he became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). Re-elected in 2024, he is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), where he serves as the spokesperson for the Spanish Socialist Delegation on Energy, as well as a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), the Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT), and the Committee on Fisheries (PECH).

González Casares was the Socialist rapporteur in ITRE for Regulation (EU) 2021/1119 of June 30, 2021, which establishes the framework for achieving climate neutrality and amends Regulations (EC) No 401/2009 and (EU) 2018/1999 (European Climate Law).

As part of the Fit for 55 package, he is the Socialist rapporteur for the proposed revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (including the REPowerEU proposal on permits) and the ENVI rapporteur for the proposed regulation on ensuring a level playing field for sustainable air transport (ReFuelEU Aviation). Additionally, he has served as the Parliament’s rapporteur for the reform of the electricity market design.
